Chapter Thirteen
Scott circled his teammate, Marcus, muscles relaxed but poised. One step to the left and Marcus gave him his opening. Springing, Scott captured the leg in one sweep and had Marcus on the mat.
Working his arms through Marcus’s, Scott forced his opponent off balance. He pressed his feet into the spongy mat, gaining purchase, and used his shoulder as leverage, bringing Marcus first to his side, and then to his back. A simple half-nelson was all it took to finish the job.
Sweating, muscles tingling, Scott released his partner and sat on his heels. Breath heaved in and out, bringing revitalizing oxygen into his body. Marcus remained prone, his eyes closed. “Dude, you suck so bad.”
Scott laughed, hopped to his feet, and offered his hand. He was tempted to make a comment about how Derek would refute such a claim, but managed to restrain himself. “If I suck, what does that say about you?”
Marcus took Scott’s hand and allowed himself to be hoisted to his feet. “Fuck you.” His smile lingered for a few seconds, then his lips flattened together in an expression of grim determination. “Again.”
For the next half hour, Scott sparred, practicing takedowns, escapes, different methods for exposing Marcus’s back to the mat. The scent of sweat fueled him. The internal furnace of heat that caused his skin to sheen from moisture was cooled by the constant breeze of the overhead fan circulating stale air. His muscles swelled from exertion, yet remained limber and pliable, obeying his every command. Yeah, here on the mat he had total control. In this place, nothing could get him down. Not even his own doubts and insecurities. They simply didn’t exist inside the wrestling circle.
Everywhere else was a different story. The moment he stepped outside the practice room, thoughts of Derek, their relationship, Tim, his father, moving around so much, crowded for space in his already saturated mind. He’d thought his talk with Derek would’ve eased his stress. Old wounds took time to heal apparently, even when the most understanding boyfriend in the world stood by his side.
“Why hasn’t Derek come to any of the practices lately?” Marcus’s question pulled Scott from his internal storm.
“I dunno. He’s pretty busy with his new peer counseling gig.” He stripped off his shirt and wiped the back of his neck and chest, drawing the attention of several girls who stood by the water bubbler. “Plus, he’s been working on a project for our music class. We have to put together a mix, choosing a particular genre.”
Marcus clapped Scott’s shoulder, the sound echoing in the room as his hand made contact with damp skin. “Derek is fuckin’ awesome at mixing. I remember the slammin’ music at last year’s dance.”
“Yeah. He’s awesome all right.” Scott started toward the exit, Marcus tagging behind him. They stepped into the locker room in silence.
At the lockers, Marcus stripped out of his clothes. Funny how Scott never felt aroused when wrestling or in the locker room. Sure, he understood the ribbing
